BESUT: A teenager’s first date turned into a nightmare when she was gang-raped by three youths on Sunday. The victim from Kampung Kayu Kelat, Jertih was earlier picked up from her home by her boyfriend at 5.30pm and taken to an oil palm estate near the La Hot Spring recreational park. There they were met by two other teenagers, who took turns raping the Form Four student before taking her home at 10pm. The victim related the incident to her mother before lodging a report at the Pasir Akar police station the following day. She was then taken to the Besut Hospital for a medical examination. Following the report, three 19-year-old suspects were picked up at their homes in Kampung Nibong, Hulu Terengganu.
Kartika spared caning for drinking beer

Religious authorities today freed a Muslim woman who had been sentenced to be caned for drinking beer, although she refused to leave a van taking her to jail when returned to her home. And her father said the change of mind would ridicule Islam, which bans Muslims from consuming alcohol. “The warrant cannot be executed,” Sharafuddin Zainal Ariffin, head of enforcement for the state of Pahang’s Islamic Affairs Department, told reporters after Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, was returned to her house. Meanwhile Pahang’s Religious Affairs, Dakwah, Unity and NGOs Exco chairperson Mohd Sahfri Abdul Aziz was quoted in the media as saying that the caning will be carried out after the fasting month. …
Syariah court judge says Kartika’s detention is illegal

KUALA LUMPUR: The order to detain part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno in prison for the execution of a syariah whipping sentence is ultra vires, said a senior Syariah court judge. Terengganu Chief Syariah Judge Datuk Ismail Yahya said if the government went ahead with the detention and whipping, it might open itself up to a suit. “Kartika can sue. This is because her detention, and subsequently the whipping, is illegal,” he said, one day before Kartika has to surrender herself to the authorities at Kajang Women’s Prison to receive six lashes of the rotan for consuming alcohol. Although Kartika was sentenced to a fine of RM5,000 and six lashes, she was not given a jail sentence. However, prison rules say that only someone who is a prisoner can be whipped. “The only way for her to end up in jail is if she doesn’t pay her fine. But from what I understand, she has paid it. “So, this means that there is no way that the whipping sentence can be executed,” said Ismail. On Tuesday, Pahang syariah deputy public prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi applied for a warrant of arrest to detain Kartika in prison for seven days.

Tukang cuci kereta maut ditembak perompak
KUALA LUMPUR 16 Ogos – Setiap hujung minggu, menjadi rutin lelaki ini mengambil kereta dari rumah seorang peniaga di Taman Suntex, Batu 9, Cheras di sini, untuk dicuci. Dan hari ini, dia memasuki kawasan rumah peniaga tersebut seperti biasa untuk mengambil kunci kereta jenis Honda Stream milik pelanggan tetapnya itu. Sedikit pun Asril Sanusi atau dikenali sebagai Ah Chai, 59, tidak menyangka rutin hujung minggu itu membawa maut apabila dia terserempak dengan tiga penjenayah yang sedang merompak rumah peniaga terbabit. Ekoran terkejut dengan kehadirannya, penjenayah tersebut bertindak menembak Ah Chai sebaik sahaja dia memasuki pekarangan rumah. Ketua Polis Daerah Kajang, Asisten Komisioner, Shakaruddin Che Mood berkata, mangsa ditembak sebanyak dua das dan mengenai dadanya. “Mangsa yang merupakan rakyat Indonesia dan memiliki taraf penduduk tetap (PR) meninggal dunia di tempat kejadian,” katanya ketika ditemui di tempat kejadian di sini hari ini. Menurut beliau, ketiga-tiga penjenayah sebelum itu mengikat peniaga, isteri, anak-anak dan pekerjanya sebelum memaksa mereka menyerahkan wang dan barangan kemas. “Tiada pergelutan antara mereka namun, terdapat kecederaan di bahagian pergelangan tangan mangsa. “Kesemua mereka diikat dengan dawai besi sebelum penjenayah melarikan wang tunai dan barang kemas yang dianggarkan bernilai RM6,000,” katanya.
Gas leak at factory kills six

TANJUNG KARANG: Six men, including two Bangladeshis, died after inhaling ammonia fumes at a fish processing factory at a private jetty in Bagan Pasir, near here, yesterday. The gas is believed to have leaked from the cooling system of a freezer at the factory. All six victims, among whom was the younger brother of the factory owner, were pronounced dead upon arrival at Tanjung Karang Hospital. The first to succumb to the fumes were two Bangladeshi workers, Sekendar Ali, 36, and Mumin Mia, 20. The two lost consciousness at 8.30am while carrying sacks of fish from the freezer to be sent to a fertiliser factory. The hazmat team securing the area where the leak occurred. Seeing their predicament, Lim Kean Chew, 35, the factory owner’s brother, rushed to their aid together with Lim Kim Soon, 58, Sia Liang Huat, 33, and Gan Ayong, 30, all of whom live near the factory. They carried the two foreigners out of the freezer area but then lost consciousness themselves. Another five men who passed out while trying to help the six were warded at the same hospital but later transferred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital for further treatment. The five — three Bangladeshi workers and two nearby residents — who are now being treated are Samsul Hud, 40, Yeon Kok Teng, 43 and Teh Ah Low, 54, and two others identified only as Abdul Rashid, 32, and Waduk, 36. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department chief Soiman Jahid said the department received a call at 8.59am and the first fire engine from Tanjung Karang arrived at the scene nine minutes later. The department’s hazmat (hazardous materials) team from Shah Alam was also rushed to the scene to prevent the leakage from spreading to some 15 houses located within a 100-metre radius of the factory. Soiman said when the team arrived, they found the six men foaming at the mouth and the other five lying unconscious nearby. “Among the first thing we did was to spray water around the affected area to dilute the toxic vapour. “We also neutralised the acidic water in the freezer using soda ash. “We ordered nearby residents to temporarily evacuate their homes as a precautionary measure but they were allowed to return home at 2pm after the area was declared safe.” The factory has four freezers that are 2.5m deep and 4.5m long. Soiman said initial investigations revealed that a damaged cooling system had caused the leakage. Kuala Selangor acting police chief Deputy Superintendent Zulkifli Jonit said the case had been classified as sudden death pending further investigations and results of post-mortem examinations.
4 penjenayah ditembak terdiri Geng Takee
KUALA LUMPUR: Empat penjenayah lelaki yang ditembak mati oleh polis di sebuah kilang simen di Rawang, awal pagi tadi dikenali sebagai Geng Takee yang terdiri warga Indonesia. Sumber polis berkata, mereka dikatakan baru melakukan cubaan menyamun di Jinjang sebelum bertembung dengan anggota polis di Jalan Bristol, berhampiran kilang simen berkenaan, kira-kira jam 6 pagi tadi.
